Seeking Relationships Between Psychointegrator Plants and the Three VRs

Roy Ascott and Luis Eduardo Luna, PhD are embarking on a research collaboration with the into relationships between what can be called the Three VRs: Virtual Reality, Validated Reality and Vegetal Reality.

• Virtual Reality (involving interactive digital technology ) is telematic, immersive

• Validated Reality (involving reactive mechanical technology) is materialist, Newtonian

• Vegetal Reality (involving psychoactive plant technology) is entheogenic, spiritual

Roy Ascott-
Pioneering the place of cybernetics and telematics in art, Roy Ascott has been working with issues of technology and consciousness since the 1960s. Seminal projects include: Terminal Art, USA/UK, 1980; La Plissure du Texte, Electra, Paris 1983; Planetary Network, Venice Biennale, 1986; Aspects of Gaia, Ars Electronica Linz 1989; Art-ID/Cyb-ID, Biennal do Mercosul, Brazil,1999; Moist Manifesto, gr2000az, Graz. 2000. He directs CAiiA-STAR(Centre for Advanced Inquiry in the Interactive Arts, University of Wales, Newport, and the Science & Technology and Art Research Centre, University of Plymouth). He was formerly Dean of San Francisco Art Institute, California, Professor for Communications Theory, Applied Arts Academy, Vienna, and President, Ontario College of Art, Toronto. He is on the editorial boards of Leonardo, Convergence, and Digital Creativity , and advises new media centres in Japan, Korea, Brazil, North America and Europe.

His theoretical work is published in many languages, including the books:  Art & Telematics: Toward the Construction of New Aesthetics. (Japanese trans. E. Fujihara). Tokyo: NTT, 1998; Reframing Consciousness: art, mind and technology (1999) and Art Technology Consciousness (2000), Intellect, UK. His collected writings, edited by Edward A. Shanken , will be published by the University of California Press later this year.

Luis Eduardo Luna-
is an anthropologist specializing in the investigation of psychointegrator plants. He is currently based in Helsinki, Finland, where he is a senior lecturer at the Swedish School of Economics. At the same time he is engaged in the creation of a Research Center on the Study of Psychointegrator Plants, Visionary and States of Consciousness, in Florianópolis, Brazil, and in the organization of special experiential and theoretical seminars in the Brazilian Amazon.
