ARTIST STATEMENT
"The Birth of the Blues" is a metaphorical expression related to Genetics and Evolution. It references the evolution of suffering and the development of Jazz as the cure. The principle of Mitosis and the division of a living cell motivated the central flowing musical score configuration of this work. Within this egg form instead of DNA we see an extract from "Maple Leaf Rag" by Scott Joplin as an intertwining sequence of notes. This piece of music is one of the most seminal works responsible for quickening the development of Jazz. Here, the score evolves into "I've Got You under My Skin" by Cole Porter. Jazz evolved to deal with life's tragedies, to express pain and to overcome it. Jazz and Blues are a kind of perennial panacea, a philosopher's stone to counteract the inherited maladies known to us as the genes of the Morbid Map. Text names of these disease genes that future scientists will work to silence and the blues that they create, forms the backdrop to this work.
