Area51: A Sound Installation by Venzha Christ, 2013, DIY-electronics, Sound Out, headphones, monitors, censors
"Area 51" is a sound installation based on the artist's travels to the secretive U.S. military base, Area 51, where he made recordings of the sounds emanating from and around the base. The device used by the artist around Area 51 was an ultrasonic frequency receiver. It is able to receive sounds that we normally cannot perceive (frequencies above 20KHz). The device automatically converts these sounds to lower frequencies perceptible to humans. The artist's approach is one that does bring to our attention to that which envelop us: strange resonances, the secrecy of governments, and a desire for cosmic connections ~ all are masked from our eyes, but present when we open our ears.
