Unwanted Genes (Weeds) on a DNA Spiral, 8" x 60", commercial printed digital print, 2003
In "unwanted genes (weeds) on a DNA spiral", the artist [a former microbiologist] continues her exploration of genetic science. It is over 50 years since the structure of DNA was first identified. Fitzgerald asks, "How do we use this knowledge to view living systems today? Too often scientific thought is mechanistic and reductive, DNA seen only as a code. We hear it likened to a computer code, a code that can be 'broken', 'edited', ‘cut and pasted'". The living wildflower weed model is an alternative metaphor.
"A weed is a plant whose virtues have not yet been discovered." - Emerson
