From the Garden of Altered Delights:Corn-bluegreen algae hybrid,17" x 13", digital inkjet print on archival paper, 2003
"From the Garden of Altered Delights" is a series of futuristic interpretations of the effects of genetic engineering on common fruits and vegetables. Although the original identities of these garden variety foods are still recognizable, the imagined hybrids constructed here are ultimately transformed into new biological entities bordering on the artificial and surreal. Perhaps these new incarnations can be engineered to grow large amounts of mega-vitamins and other nutrients needed to effectively feed the planet’s growing multitudes. Hopefully, they will also taste good. The question I ask is how much transformation will take place before these simple plants, cultivated and eaten for centuries, would become vestiges of a former world.
