The Way It Is, 24" x 33", Epson 9600 print on paper, 2003
My work investigates the approaches in image making made possible through the reliance on digital technology to presage the vision of tomorrow. Computation reveals what has previously been hidden to our naked eyes or traditional methods. This revelation of the new, I believe, is what bridges us to the future giving us a hint of what is to come tomorrow.
My image making process centers on algorithmic computations executed over the images recorded through the lens. The representation provided by the photographs is questioned, and is reduced to its essentials, thereby revealing the underlying structure of its two elements: form and color.
Each image is divided into grids of equal size. Form is extracted through a recursive subdividing process of the grids based on complexity. The colors rendered in each grid are averaged and reduced into a monochrome. Alleviated of their descriptive role within a representational view, the elemental properties of form and color are distilled into a new landscape.
