Queensbridge Windfarm 1, 13.5" x 13", inkjet print, 2004 Note: created using a historical bridge image from the Wilbur J. & Sara Ruth Watson Bridge Book Collection, in the Special Collections Department of the Cleveland State University Library.
The prints presented here are part of the Queensbridge Wind Project , a project exploring ideas for using wind turbines in ways that are both beautiful and functional made possible (in part) by the Queens Council on the Arts with public funding from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs. The Queensborough Bridge was originally built with tall spires on the towers, but in the 1950's the spires were so corroded they had to be removed. The fantasy designs presented here bring the appearance of tall spires back to the Queensborough bridge. The work attempts to provide a vision of a future in which renewable wind energy is made readily available, while at the same time preserving the city's landmark architecture.
