Second Skin: A New, Emergent Architecture
Description
of Project:
A genetic algorithm program, that manifests as 3-D models that are shown
as images, models and VR environments.
Marcos Lutyens initiated the collaboration with Tania Lopez Winkler. Lutyens
has been in charge of the psychological aspects of the project, and Winkler
with the programming. The architectural outreach has been undertaken by
both, in London, Poland, Italy, Spain, Mexico and the US. The concept
follows on the tail of collaborations between Lutyens and the renowned
cyber-architect, Marcos Novak.
Contract:
There has been no contract, other than with the Programming and Architecture
faculty of the Tech de Monterrey in Mexico.
Process/Concept:
1) Second Skin uses hypnosis and genetic algorithms to extract and process
embedded mental information to build a new approach to architecture. The
field of study relating to Bose-Einstein condensates, and the influence
of quantum issues on the understanding of consciousness are particularly
pertinent to this exploration of 'mass mind'.
2) Volunteers listen to a hypnotic induction which extracts conceptions of 'dwelling' from the unconscious. The volunteers are instructed to render their visualizations in a state of trance. Each volunteer is subsequently interviewed in order to extract additional information. These volunteers have taken part in our workshops at various prestigious institutions such as the Architectural Association in London, The Arts Academy of Gdansk,Poland, "The Video in Architecture Festival "(2002) Florence, Italy, etc
3) The resulting models are inputted into our (patented) genetic algorithm program, developed at the Technical Institute of Monterrey, Mexico (Jan -June 2002)
4) These models provide us with traits from which we are developing our grammar of emergent architecture. These computer models are being applied to the creation of full-scale models for itinerant shows including one slated for the Los Angeles County Museum, California 2003.

Marcos Lutyens is an intermedia artist who works in the terrain of virtuality and consciousness. He has shown internationally, such as the Venice Biennale of Art(2001) as well as Architecture (2002). His projects involve medical, arcitectural, psychological explorations. His world building activities have also extended to set design, such for musicians such as for Madonna and Marilyn Manson.

Tania Lopez Winkler recently graduated from the Architectural Association, London with an honours degree. She is presently living in Mexico City where she is working on her PhD, as well as teaching at the Tech de Monterrey, Queretaro, Mexico.
