Dr. Laurence Smaje

Dr. Laurence Smaje is Director of the Medicine, Science & History Division of The Wellcome Trust, the world's largest medical research charity. This involves overseeing the Trust's public programmes in public understanding of medicine and biomedical ethics, the communications and external relations functions and also the programme in the History of Medicine, including one of the leading international libraries in the History of medicine. He studied medicine at University College London before entering research in physiology, in which he spent 25 years and was Professor of Physiology and Chairman of his department, during the last 10 years of this period. In 1987 he moved to The Wellcome Trust, where he was responsible for the physiology and pharmacology programme, before being asked to head the Trust's new initiative on the public understanding of medical science in 1990 and taking on the broader remit described above in 1998.
