Artist Statement:

This image ( Virginia/Mars Sampler ) is part of a series that explores the similarities of the landscapes of Earth and other planets - specifically Mars and Jupiter. For many years I have been travelling to many parts of the west and northwest photographing varied "damaged" landscapes. Prior to visiting these locations I had become interested in the images sent back to Earth from NASA's Pathfinder mission to Mars and Galileo's survey of Jupiter - landscapes that resonated with familiarity. By juxtaposing and manipulating my images with those from Mars and Jupiter, joining the two places on the same page, my earlier concerns about challenging traditional ways of viewing the landscape has taken on a new dimension.
