Artist Statement:

Exponential:

Electrons injected at the upper right experience a roller coaster ride over a bumpy surface. The bumps are caused by nearby positively charged atoms. Each electron has a slightly different direction initially; this difference is magnified exponentially as they travel over the bumps, causing them to spread out. The formation of branches (whiter areas) where the electrons concentrate is an unexpected and indirect effect of riding over the hills and valleys. The channeling or branching has important implications for small electronic devices of the future.

Caustic I

Caustics are places where things accumulate; here light is accumulating in characteristic shapes on a ãsea bottomä, after being refracted by two consecutive wavy surfaces. This image was inspired by our study of propagation of waves through random media, which affects everything from twinkling of stars to whale communication.

Each image is an original created by sending a digital file to a LightJet imager. The Lighjet writes to 50" wide photographic paper. The images are then developed through the normal photographic process. The resulting prints have a 60-year archival life under normal lighting conditions. Autumncolor, in Worcester, Massachusetts handles print management.
