INTRODUCTION

This is the forth year that Art & Science Collaborations, Inc.has organized this digital art exhibition, now concentrating solely on digital prints. We are now at a point with this new field where the availability of archival digital inks and printing processes have assuaged the fears regarding "collectibility" and both commercial galleries and major museums show and collect this work. Those battles won -- at lightning speed compared to the acceptance of photography as a fine art medium -- this exhibition focuses on content rather than the technology used.

For Digital'01: Our Sci-Tech World, we invited artists and scientists around the world to submit digital prints (ones that employed significant computer manipulation) that reflect a micro or macro view of science and/or technology , or that comment on the potentially negative consequences of current scientific research. Over 100 entries were received, mostly from artists, and we hope to gain the participation of more scientists in the future. It is interesting to note the complex yet elegant beauty of the images that are based on either mathematics and/or a type of visualization of a scientific phenomena.

Our juror this year was Michal Smith, trained as a research biologist, who transitioned into computer technology and then founded Silicon Gallery in Philadelphia, the first fine art digital print workshop/gallery in the United States, www.fineartprint.com We are pleased to present Digital'01 and her unique curatorial perspective.
