"NPK.2," 42cm x 33cm, Duraclear Print, face mounted onto clear acrylic, 2002

Artist Statement:

"NPK.2" hits the male population where it hurts the most, threatening their virility & in the process drawing attention to how the things we consume effect our bodies. The letters represent the main ingredients of artificial fertilizers (Nitrogen, Potassium, Phosphorus).

The background is an ultra-sound of a males testis. The images that appear to float above the ultra sound are of a Fractal (Mandelbrot Set) manipulated in a variety of ways including a scanned Solar Plate Etching. The infinite nature of Fractal patterns is a allegorical reference to the potential & variables associated to the subject matter. Images of male reproductive cells make a link with the background & foreground. The ominous yet beautiful butterfly pupa becomes a metaphor for environmental issues, associated to the topic of Organic versus conventional farming methods & the choices we canmake.
