Elise Bernhardt is currently a curator, producer, and cultural program designer. She was Artistic Advisor for New York City Center's first Fall for Dance Festival, for which she curated 30 companies for a completely sold-out 6-night festival, and continues in that role for the upcoming festival. From 1998- June 2004 Bernhardt was Executive Director of The Kitchen in NYC. Under her leadership, The Kitchen significantly expanded its audiences, increased its budget, professionalized its staff and strengthened its services to artists, presenting new works in all disciplines. She also initiated The Kitchen's Sidney Kahn Summer Institute, a three week intensive for emerging artists of all disciplines, which is accredited by Sarah Lawrence College and which celebrated its 5th year this past June. In 1983, Bernhardt founded Dancing in the Streets, producing performances in public spaces including Grand Central Terminal, Central Park, Roosevelt Island, Wave Hill, Coney Island, the Red Hook piers, the Swingbridge in Newcastle Upon Tyne, L.A.'s Bradbury Building, Union Station in Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. and the Paris Metro, with artists such as Merce Cunningham, Stephan Koplowitz, Susan Marshall, Meredith Monk and Elizabeth Streb. Ms. Bernhardt has also served on numerous panels including Live Music for Dance and the Bessie committee. She received her B.A. from Sarah Lawrence College, which awarded her the Alumnae Citation for Achievement in 2001. | |
