Artist Statement:
I studied photography at the University of Iowa School of Art while completing my Ph.D. in English. My photographs have appeared in group, individual, and juried exhibitions in upstate New York, and have been published in national magazines, including Outdoor Photographer and Popular Photography. My work is informed by eastern principles of mindfulness and meditation, within a tradition in which the experience of the present moment in all its fullness is highly valued, since that is, after all, all we can really know. I often photograph natural subjects, some outside, others in a lightbox, and seek to find in them some organic form that I can transform in the digital darkroom into objects or tableaux that retain traces or evidence of their original form yet yield new aesthetic possibilities. This year's theme of "exquisite" seemed right for some of my images.
