ARTIST STATEMENT

Peter N. Gray is an artist/scientist whose recent works focus on the genographic mapping of human ancient ancestry. Primarily a sculptor in steel and bronze, his sculptural works require information from DNA structure, sequences, and SNPs (single nucleotide permutations) of non-expressed regions of the DNA in nuclear and mitochondrial chromosomes. “Mitochondrial Ancestry” depicts the small circular DNA segregated in the mitochondrion. The hypervariable region of this genome is used by organizations such as the National Geographic Society to collect information that leads to a map of the global Diaspora from Eastern Africa between 100,000 and 50,000 years ago.
