Candlesoot Comet by Simon Brewster, 1999, pencil and candlesoot on heavy paper
This work was created using the soot from a household candle, structured around a pencil-drawn ellipse. Each soot mark was directed away from one ellipse focus, imitating how the Sun's solar wind brushes cometary material out into space. I was fascinated by how the soot mark so closely resembled comet tails.
This work seeks to highlight how the processes behind vast and sublime astronomical phenomena, can be found in the most humble and everyday materials
