ARTIST STATEMENT
My artwork has always referenced scientific concepts, processes, or tools, although my work has been primarily concerned with the human perspective and the human condition.
However, I have recently begun addressing science in a more direct manner. Specifically, how a biological action or event within my own body, sometimes insignificant or sometimes major, intersects with my conscious life. This is a direct result of a problem I developed with the optic nerve in my left eye which impacted my ability to see colors and shapes.
As a visual artist, it was natural for me to explore how this condition affected my identity and sense of self through my art. I expressed my thoughts and feelings by combining the images and data from my own medical records with other more recognizable symbols, such as a diagram of a solar eclipse, to construct narratives about my experiences within each piece.
