ARTIST STATEMENT

These works begin with an exploration of “cenesthesia,” or “the general feeling of inhabiting one's body that arises from multiple stimuli from various bodily organs” (Merriam-Webster Medical Dictionary). Combining scanning electron micrographs of sense organs which I create myself with macro photographs from Japanese gardens that were constructed to “tickle the senses," these prints ultimately combine environments where sensation is triggered with images of the sensory system itself. In response to a technology mediated world where we are increasingly desensitized to physical sensation, these works call upon viewers to expand their awareness of the worlds they inhabit, whether those worlds are their own bodies or the spaces that surround them. By focusing on modes of sensation in relation to special environments, these images become hybrid “landscapes” where viewers travel through mammoth tastebuds and human retinas into a scramble of roots, reminiscent of complex vascular systems.
